AYTON CROSS

The latest tug to be based at Greenock is Svitzer's AYTON CROSS. Built by Astilleros Zamacona at Bilbao in 2000, she was initially based on the Tees, before moving to the Mersey in 2005. Quoted as having a bollard pull of 55 tonnes, AYTON CROSS is fitted with twin azimuth units mounted aft, driven by Niigita main engines each producing 2,200 bhp. She is 33 metres long, and 433 tons gross. Her arrival at Greenock on 1 November is depicted here. AYTON CROSS was the first of two sisters from the Spanish shipyard, the other already being a familiar name on the Clyde, ORMESBY CROSS.
