HMS TORBAY, the 'Trafalgar' Class submarine seen
yesterday, was back upfirth today and is seen here as she prepared to head into the Gareloch and up to HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane. This particular submarine has very recently completed a
year-long refit at Faslane, which cost an estimated £8 million. As well as being upgraded to carry the latest version of Tomahawk cruise missile,
TORBAY is the first member of the 'Silent Service' to do away with paper charts, as new Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (
WECDIS) have been installed. In the backgound, one of the Royal Navy's
'Vanguard' Class Trident missile submarines can be seen heading out to sea. Her considerably greater size is amply demonstrated - she is 150 metres long with a displacement of 15,900 tonnes . TORBAY is 85m, with a displacement of 5,200 tonnes.
