USNS BIG HORN - T-AO198

Providing support as one of the fleet tankers for Joint Warrior 081 is the United States Navy's Military Sealift Command ship BIG HORN, a member of the numerous 'Henry J Kaiser' class of Fleet Replenishment Oilers. She is a sistership of USNS LARAMIE, which supported a simialr exercise last September.

Seen berthing at Loch Striven this morning, BIG HORN was accepted into service in 1992, and was built by Avondale Shipyards at New Orleans. With an overall length of 203 metres, she has a displacement of around 40,700 tonnes. Unusually, her arrival at Loch Striven NATO jetty was assisted by SVITZER MALLAIG, WARRIOR III and KINDEACE, rather than by Serco-Denholm tugs.
