USS ARLEIGH BURKE - DDG51

One of the large number of foreign visitors arriving on the Clyde to take part in Joint Warrior 091, the latest large-scale exercise about to take place off the northwest coast of Scotland, arrived this afternoon. The United States Navy's ARLEIGH BURKE, lead ship of a large class of guided missile destroyers, sailed from her base at Norfolk, Virginia, at the end of April, and is due to join the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean after the exercise. She was built by Bath Iron Works, and launched in September 1989, joining the US Navy in July 1991. She is currently assigned to Desron Two. She was the first US warship designed with 'stealth' radar-avoidance techniques and is fitted with an 'Aegis' combat system.
